Paul Rusesabagina
RWANDAN FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST
Paul Rusesabagina, the real-life inspiration behind the film Hotel Rwanda, is a humanitarian and advocate for peace whose life’s work has been shaped by the events of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. During that time, Rusesabagina risked his life to shelter and protect more than 1,200 people from the violence that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands.
Now living in the United States after his release from prison in 2023, Rusesabagina reflects on the enduring need for reconciliation, forgiveness, and healing nearly 30 years after the genocide. He is dedicated to amplifying the voices of genocide survivors, supporting peace-building efforts, and advocating for the international community to act decisively in preventing future atrocities. His story is a testament to courage, compassion, and the urgent need for global vigilance in the face of injustice.
